Honda starts work on 1,000-cr Kolar plant

BANGALORE: In the Honda, Karnataka has managed to become one of the great automotive giant to drop anchor in the country after the Japanese car major Toyota, and the Swedish bus manufacturer Volvo. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HSM) whollyowned subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, Japan, has begun work on the creation of 3 manufacturing facility in India, at Speaker (near Bangalore), the investment of Rs 1000 crore.

The facility, which is divided into 350000 m², will start in the first half of 2013 the annual production capacity of 1.2 million units. Both scooters and motorcycles manufactured at this facility. HMSI product line-up includes three automatic scooters in India, six from 110cc to 250 cc motorcycles segment, and three 1000cc superbikes in the segment that has a fully staffed.

When the new factory will employ HMSI total annual production capacity will go up to 4 million units per year, including 1.6 million units in its first plant manesar, Haryana, and 1.2 million units of its second plant Tapukara (Rajasthan). Speaking at the cornerstone laying ceremony at the new plant Keita Muramatsu, president and CEO, HSM, said the increase in capacity by adding a new factory the company prepares for further growth, cut down the waiting time for vehicles to meet the growing demand in India and 11320000 units of two-wheel market. Currently, three products - Activa Shine and Unicorn - is the average waiting time of three months, the company wants to reduce up to 15 days to 30 days.


"India is a huge market too. We have two facilities in the north, but we had the opportunity and especially in the southern Karnataka, as it is one of the major markets of South-HSM," Muramatsu said.HMSI for the Southern Area is the largest, accounting for 30% of total sales. Company officials said that a number of ancillary units coming up around your new plant, which will have a localization rate of 80%. Starting in 2010, HMSI had 13% market share in India's two-wheel market, where it plans to increase to 14% (21 lakh units), the end of December 2011.

Although HMSI enjoys 40% market share in scooter segment, this is only a 7% market share in the motorcycle segment. HMSI sold 16.56 lakh units in 2010-11, an increase of 30% to 12.7 lakh units for the prior fiscal year. Scooter sales account for 54% of total sales.
